Danny and Reuven talked about Danny’s brother and how sick he was. They also talked about how he would have to take pills for the rest of his life. Reuven asked about Danny’s sister, Danny told him that his sister had been betrothed when she was two years old. Later that week Reuven and his father left for the cottage near Peekskill. While the were gone American dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That September Reuven and Danny entered college.

Reuven’s father is very thin. Reuven didn’t even think that his father could get any thinner that he already was. Reuven’s father Reuven and Danny, talked some more about the destruction in Europe. Reuven and Danny left. The next morning Reuven said something he shouldn’t have at breakfast and Red Saunders chewed him out.

Danny and Reuven spent time visiting Reuven’s father in the hospital. Reuven’s father spent a lot of time reading the newspaper about the destruction in Europe. Reuven’s father asked Danny what he was reading. Danny answered that he was reading Freud. Reuven’s father told Danny that Freud was not the only word in psychoanalysis and that many disagree with Freud.

Reb Saunders started to withdraw. He was very sullen this scared his family and Reuven. Danny and Reuven did every thing together thatmonth. The only time Reuven saw Danny talk to his father was during their Talmud battles. Reuven began to think that they were physicaly unable to communicate. Danny and Reuven often talked about Danny's reading of Freud.

Reuven talks to his father about the destruction in Europe. Two days after Reuven’s final Examination his father suffered a heart attack He was rushed to a hospital in Brooklyn. Reb Saunders invited Reuven to live with them until his father was better. During that time Reuven stayed with Danny’s family he felt welcome and warmly accepted.

In May the war in Europe finally came to an end. The actual signing took place on May 7th. Unbelievable numbers of Jews were slaughtered. Six million was the final count of how many Jews were killed during the war. Reuven went over to Danny’s house, not to study the Talmud but to talk about the Jewish destruction in Europe with Danny and his father.
