moby dick 11-3

For the next part, i don't really understand it.  But, Ishmael seems to tell a story that he heard when to ships met.  they were arguing with each other about something while trying to harpoon Moby Dick at the same time.  I guess one of the guys fell in the ocean and the whale ate him.  That was just a briefing of the story, but i think it gets the point across.  Anyway,  nobody beleived the man, but he swore on his life that it was true.

In order to understand the next part, i need to explain what a 'gam' is.  A 'gam' is a social meeting of two (or more) Whale-ships, generally on a cruising-ground; when, after exchanging hails, they exchange visits by boats’ crews: the two captains remaining, for the time, on board of one ship, and the two chief mates on the other. Ishmael explains that they did not have a 'gam' because Ahab only desires 'gams' if the other ship has information about Moby Dick.

The men come upon a ship called the Albatross.  It is a vessel with a spectral apperance that has been at sea for at least four years.  Ahab asks the crew on the other ship if they have seen Moby Dick.  Unfortunately they cant hear him and the wind takes them away.  Ishmael says that they continue sailing 'around the world'.

One night they spot a whale spouting.  They try following it but it disapears.  From that day on they see a similar spout .  Some think it is Moby Dick.  Ishmael calls it the spirit spout cause its like a phantom.  Some think it is leading them to their destruction.    Anyway, they are traveling through the Cape of Good Hope whick is really dangerous.  Some of the men are scared considering the conditions.  Ahab is commanding the ship very well, and is very determined.

Ahab decides to have his own harpoon boat and crew.  Ishmael says this is not typical for the captian to risk his life on the harpoon boat, especially because of the injuries that Ahab is inflicted with.  Obviously the owners of the ship would not approve, but Ahab is a fierce fighter and really wants revenge of the white whale.  I thought this was interesting.

Basically what this is about is Ishmael and his views on whaling.  He thinks the situation that they were in the recent whale was funny.  He relizes that this is a very dangerous job. The crew tells him that they have been in much worse conditions that this. He decides to make a will with the help of Queequeg considering the conditions.  in fact, he already considers himself dead because of the conditions.
